    Well, after reading this post I am definitely going to surface compost for the winter. i had heard of Americans doing this as was contemplating it. Anyway my compost bin (dalek style) never seems to break down my waste!

    Tee hee - I think I'll have to show your comment to the other people on my allotment when they say that my plot looks a mess ;)

    I have been doing that recently on my new plot as I don't yet have the space cleared to set up my bins. My previous allotment neighbour (who had had his plot since 1966 and is quite a traditionalist) used to do it too and never had any compost bins or boxes at all. It's easier in the winter when you don't need the space for growing.
